Directory Path: structures > structural material

The structural material is the predominant material used in the framing system of any structure. This excludes all finishing materials. The structural system usually uses a single material to carry the structural loads, although since the 1960s there has been an increasing use of "composite systems" in which both steel and concrete are utilized together in ways that neither material predominates over the other.

Abstract:   The load-bearing material used in the building frame.
